The Musical Slave

Kristin Vollset (aka *The Musical Slave) is a musician, filmmaker and producer. She writes songs about life, cosmic forces and the world economy, and is equally passionate about filmmaking - producing short films that combine the genres of documentary, fiction and musical.

Vollset is from Bergen on the west coast of Norway, but she´s happiest when she´s out wandering. She started making music around the year 2000, jamming on the streets in France. In 2001 she moved to London where she attended the London Film School, and also composed vocal- and noisebased soundscapes with a small group of musicians. In 2003 she travelled to Mexico, where she started working as a street musician. She also worked as a fisher in the Mexican lagoon of Temascal.

In 2004-2005 Vollset attended the Grieg Academy in Bergen, where she studied composition. She has also worked as a school assistant, painter, scaffolder, bricklayer, gardener, and on a farm making cheese and sausages. From 2006 to 2010 she was in the band Bergen Beach Band, and they toured extensively in Norway, Sweden and Ireland.

From 2011 to 2014 she lived in Ireland, which she describes as her soul´s true home. She ended up buying her own horse and becoming part of the urban horse community around the Guinness factory in Dublin.

Vollset is best known for her song and short documentary,"No Plan" (2016), about her experiences in an urban horse yard in Dublin. The film was screened in festivals worldwide, and won the award for best short documentary at the IFI´s Documentary Film Festival in Dublin, in 2017.

In 2020 she released another song and short musical documentary from inner-city Dublin, "They can´t stop you". It won the award for best music video at the Bergen International Film Festival, in 2020.

Vollset is now working on her upcoming short film, "Robin in the Hood", also based around the urban horse culture in Dublin. Her feature documentary, "Horses & Cars", is also in the making. She still performs in the street as The Musical Slave, as she has been doing since 2003.
